    A brooch was awarded to every mother of those who served in World War 1. In Catherine's case, she had 4 sons serve, hence the brooch and 3 bars. Sadly 2 sons did not survive the conflict and are buried in Commonwealth War Graves cemeteries in Belgium and France.
